need to use up leftovers?
grimly staring at undignified rice/noodles?
plop in an oiled wok/pan~~add spices, vegetables,
(i recommend cumin, curry powder, ginger, black pepper, etc., and spinach or really any veggies i love them all...except beets. are they vegetables?)

and top with a good ol' fried egg.
trick for cooking eggs: top the pan with a lid. doing so settles the egg white (otherwise known as the albumen lol) faster, and still produces a yolk of poached-like runniness

and this is my creation

close-up uh huh
i apologize if yolks disgust you

dbl jep//ego//cococurry

it's somewhat of a family ritual to watch Jeopardy!, the trivia game show, before dinner.

(insinuating epistemological hesitation since 1984)

questions and Trebek cook our brains--and our egos--as curry simmers in the background.

(always so pleasantly hesitant)

the other night i wanted to have a Jeopardy! marathon with myself. i hunted online for free episodes, but to no avail.

perhaps illegality brought about failure. but my unrelenting google-search refreshing for a trivia-influenced ego boost led me to a question: why am i doing this? why am i humming as a drone in the dark, punching a keyboard, yearning for confirmation of my own intellectual worth?

this is not to say that watching Jeopardy! is nothing but a self-assuring lark; it can be a way to challenge yourself, stimulate the folds of your memory, and get a group of people involved.

but at 2am, searching for boastfulness, i registered the illusion of the show; although it's entertaining to recall scattered minutiae, feel erudite on the daily double--these are the only feelings Jeopardy! can really confirm. to base one's worth on mercurial trivia is to found a fickle perception of the self. identity is then as liable to sudden change as anything else. i'd rather not base an opinion of myself on dings and buzzes.

Jeopardy! is fun~~not too serious. remembering the middle name of a little-known Spanish explorer does not render you superior to your competitor. nor does feeling clueless make the Jeopardy! all-star better (he or she may become considerably richer...but half the earned winnings go to taxes anyway oops).

REGARDLESS, i'd love to keep watching this show with other people, and keep watching other people watch this show. when i happen to answer a question correctly, i find myself imbued with a warm yet fleeting complacency; it's temporary, unimportant, trivial~~but the moment delivers enough. i like to see that smug yet simpering beam from my fellow viewers' teeth. let everyone have their little moment of indulgence, once in a while.

NOW, i think a discussion of the ego warrants a transition to curry.

CURRY~CURRY~CURRY~CURRY~CURRY~CURRY~CURRY~CURRY~CURRY

the following recipe is adapted from the Table for Two blog. a link can be found here:
http://www.tablefortwoblog.com/slow-cooker-pumpkin-coconut-curry/

i love this recipe because it eases the cook into a sometimes intimidating exploit; crockpot cookin' was foreign to me, until all the recipe required was some can-dumpin' and vegetable-cuttin'-and-dumpin'. give it six hours, and voila.

VEGAN SWEET POTATO-PUMPKIN COCONUT [slow-cooker] CURRY

(OCTOBER NEVER ENDS~~sorry billy)

INGREDIENTS

1 15-ounce can of unsweetened coconut milk (with whatever fat content you desire)
1 15-ounce can of pumpkin PUREE (not pumpkin pie filling--although that might be interesting in a curry--who says curry can't taste like nutmeg)
1 cup vegetable stock
CURRY POWDER (to your taste)
BLACK PEPPER (to your taste)
SALT (to your taste)
WHATEVER SPICES YOU WANT (you go glen coco[nut curry])
1/2 large onion, diced (what if i said minced?)
1 garlic clove, minced (what if i said diced?)
3 large carrots, but into 1-inch pieces (precisely--anything other than 1 inch is unacceptable)
3 small sweet potatoes, cut into cubes (don't make em too think, of they won't cook all the way through)
1 lime for its juice

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. pull out your crockpot/slow cooker, and dump all the coconut milk, all the pumpkin puree, and the vegetable stock, and all the spices in it. mix.

2. add the veggies and lime juice to mixture. stir to distribute evenly

3. cook on low (i originally typed "on love") for 6 hours.

4. enjoy with yourself//friends//family//Alex Trebek

como agua para chocolate//musings//igloos

Like Water for Chocolate/Como agua para chocolate
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103994/

yes, it's on Netflix.

as part of that previously-stated effort to spend less and create more, yesterday's reunion with a friend saw OATMEAL PEANUT BUTTER-CHOCOLATE IGLOOS slidin from an oven rack into a laughing apartment.

inside-joke guffawing rendered the air as deliciously dense as those igloos i casually CAPITALIZED~~and i call them igloos because these babies are NOT cookies. they are landmarks.

any epicurean (
 )
would, i think, call these nom-noms escapades; though they bring pleasure by taste, their baking process stirred musings--knowing that now, by standing in this kitchen, crafting this specific sweetness with a loved one, you're carrying the same spirit as anyone who has ever united with another to achieve an end. a final goal warrants the process, nevermind the mess.

so, to me, baking inspires mental pleasure. not only does the treat justify the means, but the act of baking--dirtying bowls, questioning the flour to baking powder ratio--justifies another, sometimes unforeseen end: we use the primordial necessity to EAT as a reason, an excuse, to get together.

and when im baking, i don't fear death//unless my partner and i greet an existential crisis, which is not out of the question//. contrarily, mixing with a wooden spoon relieves mental tumult, and transfers pain to the wrists--which then delight later in carrying an OATMEAL PEANUT BUTTER-CHOCOLATE IGLOO to your source of consciousness.

this recipe is adapted from a MOM BLOG (hallelujah). i originally found it on one of those buzzfeed lists however, so no, i'm not the resourceful mom-blog discoverer that the previous statement may have led you to imagine.

MY RECIPE ADAPTATION: OATMEAL PEANUT BUTTER-CHOCOLATE IGLOOS

Ingredients:
1/2 cup butta (that's one full stick uh huh)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup DARK drown sugar
1 large egg
1 tsp vanilla extract (pls disobey me and put more vanilla than this)
1 1/4 cup flour (use any flour(s) you desire; we used 1 cup all-purpose, and 1/4 cup whole wheat)
3/4 cups old fashioned oats
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powda
12 candies (HERE comes the improvisation. the blog recommends using caramels, but we didn't have caramels so we used 85% cocoa dark chocolate. the bitterness of the chocolate, in our opinion, works well; it balances the sweetness of the cookie and compliments the nutty topping. but use any candy/filling you'd like. another forerunner was chocolate-coconut truffles. but my friend despises coconut. and i find truffles intimidating.)
A jar of peanut butter handy for whimsical globs 2 come

INSTRUCTIONS (yes i copied and pasted no i will not change the font to create an illusion of cohesion):

In a small sauce pan melt butter on medium/low heat until it has become a golded brown color and spells kind of nutty or toffee like. Remove from heat.

In a medium bowl mix both sugars, egg and vanilla together. After that is combinded mix in your browned butter.

Mix in your, oats, flour, salt and baking powder. Once your dough has come together refriderate for 20 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees (celsius.~~just kidding)
Once the dough has chilled a bit, remove from refrigerator and roll into 12 equal sized balls. Place each cookie dough ball on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet about 2 inches a part.

Push a carmel square (or whatever candy you got, baby) into the center of each cookie dough ball. You can form the sides of the cookies a bit if you want to cover the caramel more.

Dollop a tsp of peanut butter (HOWEVER MUCH YOU REALLY WANT DONT LISTEN TO MOM) on the top of each caramel.

Bake for 12-14 minutes or until the cookies are golden.

Allow to cool for about 15 minutes then enjoy. Store in an air tight container and heat up in the microwave for about 10 seconds to enjoy them again!

evidence:

 (dough after refrigeration)
(the cookies will be a bit crumbly and difficult to form; don't worry)
(the smooth skippy is a lie we really used crunchy)

(i made this one extra large because i think it is the most beautiful of all)

metheny//nutty debut

"Have You Heard" of Pat Metheny?

i hadn't.

my aunt grimaced.

(choose which reaction you think she most likely exhibited)

after i listened a bit to Letter from Home by the Pat Metheny Group, though, i now find myself recommending it.

the band's great to listen to WHILE YOU MAKE VEGAN SWEET POTATO CARROT PANCAKES WITH NUT BUTTER.

i harbor a vague yearning for vegan cooking, likely due to the influence of a close friend. her parents have maintained a vegan household for ten or fifteen years. when i visited the house for high school sleepovers, i was routinely astounded by how SOUL-fulfilling vegan food could feel. note//not only does my friend's parents' food taste beautifully, but it just digests more efficiently. it FEELS good.

("vegan" does not automatically denote healthfulness, in the same way that "going on a diet" does not promise rapid weight loss. it's not what you do, it's how you do it.

but this gal's parents prioritize, i gotta say it, INGREDIENTS OF THE EARTH, not vegetarian dairy-free escapes.
saltines and dots are vegan, sure, meaning they contain no animal products. still, veganism and truly NOURISHING the body are not tied to each other.

but they can be.)

to extend her brooklyn brownstone family diet, my friend and i usually scour the city for vegan restaurants.

but recently, i've tried to remind myself that home cookin' is really something i should capitalize on more.

i say i love cooking&baking. so now i practice while taking my wallet off Jenny Craig.

here is my "nutty debut": SWEET POTATO CARROT PANCAKES WITH NUT BUTTER.

the pancakes themselves are vegan, refined-sugar free, and HELLA good. but nut butter and i are like <3333333333

(i told myself im being vegan today, just for excitement. yup, folks, this stuff is exciting to me. but again, VEGAN DOES NOT MEAN HEALTHY. at the same time, it is important to not be overly conscious of the food you eat. moderation is key, baby (Aristotle<33333))

here is the title again: SWEET POTATO CARROT PANCAKES WITH NUT BUTTER

MAKES THREE MEDIUM PANCAKES

1 small sweet potato, cooked (use however much of the sweet potato you want; i used half)
1/2 cup ANY FLOUR YOU WANT (i used oat flour by makin old-fashioned oats into finely-ground particles with the help of my blender friend)
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1 large carrot (put in however many shavings you want i dont care i wont count them wutevr)
1 truvia packet (switch out for brown sugar, honey, or maple syrup if you want~~this is the first time i tried truvia in a recipe~~im usually not a fan of fake sugar but the "true" sound of the brand really worked on me~~thanks advertising hehehe wut do u do in your boardrooms~~plus it's supposed to be less harmful than other fake sweetners rite?)
SO MUCH GROUND CINNAMON AND NUTMEG AND CLOVES (to taste)
1 tsp vanilla (always put extra)
1/2 cup water

INSTRUCTIONS

mix all the stuff together at your own discretion. this is vegan ladies and gentlemen, you don't have to worry too much about separating the wet ingredients from the dry ones lol wutever gluten

MIX IT

spray a skillet with no-stick spray

COOK IT

EAT IT or top with WHATEVER U WANT (i recommend cashew butter yum)

I love this recipe; it refreshes usual vegan pancake recipes by switching out banana or applesauce for sweet potatoes and carrots. PLUS IT'S VITAMIN A PACKED and kind of a recipe for latkes instead of a recipe for pancakes.

here are pics sorry for my hand and utensils sometimes heehee (but i did it on purpose)

(woah there, sarah, that's like, a lot of cashew butter)
(said no one)

y'all//majeure//manners?

hi y'all,

im a y'all-saying New Yorker. earth-shattering//mind-blowing, isn't it?

anyway, i want to start a blog that shouts recipes, writing, and photography. unheard of, isn't it?

a force majeure

(French phrase having two major definitions:

choose which one im using here)

force majeure behind the name of this blog (^^^^^) is the acknowledgement that noteworthy remarks often spark that universal "i-can't-wait-to-say-what-im-thinking" force when tongues flirt with sustenance.

flirting with sustenance. unheard of? maybe. but it's what i like to think eating can be.

i, and probably anyone who crosses this blog, are lucky enough to count on food--daily, at least. if we have this luxury, why not enjoy it, flirt with it, have sex with it, violate any table-manners temperance as our tongues beat the roofs of our mouths?

many claim ideas when inspired. if there's any tangible resource for inspiration, baby, it's flavor.

so SHOUT your ideas with your MOUTH FULL.

here's where i can shout without sound, but//however//with the occasional ALL CAPS in situations where I believe they are warranted.

shouting without sound.

what a task.
